The US House of Representatives approves measures that pave the way for granting citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants

The US House of Representatives approved yesterday, Thursday, to provide a path to citizenship for nearly four million undocumented immigrants, while the New York Times said it is reopening a politically charged debate about the immigration system in the United States, at a time when President Joe Biden faces a growing increase in the number of immigrants. At the border.

With a quasi-partisan vote, 228 MPs, against 197, supported the establishment of a legal pathway for more than 2.5 million undocumented immigrants, including those brought to the United States as children, the so-called Dreamers, and granting others temporary protection status on humanitarian grounds. Only nine Republicans voted in favor.

Hours later, lawmakers approved a second measure, with more bipartisan support, that would eventually give legal status to wiping out a million farm workers and their families while updating the agricultural visa program. About 30 Republicans representing agricultural provinces have joined nearly all of the Democrats in support of the measure.

The New York Times notes that these two votes represent milestones for dreamers and other activists who campaigned 10 years ago, often with personal risks, to bring in the 11 million undocumented immigrants who live in the United States out of the shadows. Dreamers, who have temporary status, and agricultural workers have often lived for a long time in the United States and measures to normalize them have broad public support.

The newspaper goes on to say that the House of Representatives, by moving quickly to consider the two bills, bet that defining relatively narrow but popular immigration reforms could stir a stalled political debate after years of failed attempts to put in place more comprehensive immigration legislation that resonated with a wide audience.
