A recent US report confirmed that the Afghan Taliban did not abide by the conditions that guarantee the complete withdrawal of US military forces from Afghanistan by next May.
The report, issued by a committee delegated by the US Congress, recommended to re-focus on the terms of the withdrawal contained in the agreement last year, between the previous US administration and the Taliban, and work to extend the deadline for the withdrawal of forces, which is about to expire.
The report of the committee, which was called the "Afghanistan Study Group", indicated that it would be extremely difficult, and perhaps impossible, to complete the withdrawal by May 2021, the date included in the agreement, which emphasized the necessity of withdrawing forces by it.
Commenting on the report, General Joseph Dunford, the former Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Army, who worked under the administration of former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, and co-chair of the committee that issued the report, said that the committee tried not to deal with the issue emotionally, in terms of how much it is necessary to stay. Or leave, because the American forces have been in Afghanistan for 20 years, but dealing with the issue is required by the logical and analytical perspective.
It is noteworthy that former US President Donald Trump reduced US forces in Afghanistan before leaving power to 2,500 soldiers, the lowest level in the size of those forces since 2001, but the committee found in its report that the optimal number of these forces is 4,500 soldiers.
