Guterres stresses the necessity of holding the Libyan elections December 24, 2021



The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, made two separate phone calls to each of the President of the Presidency Council in charge of the State of Libya, Muhammad Yunus Al-Exiled, and the Prime Minister-designate and Abdel-Hamid Muhammad Dabaiba, and congratulated the exiled Secretary-General and Dabaiba on their recent appointment by the members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.


The Secretary-General stressed the importance of ensuring the work of the new executive authority in order to hold national elections on December 24, 2021, and renewed the full commitment of the United Nations to support its efforts in this regard.


The Secretary-General of Mr. Muhammad Yunus Al-Manfi and Mr. Abdul Hamid Muhammad Dabaiba reiterated, "The United Nations is ready to support the mechanisms of monitoring the ceasefire led by Libya, and the Secretary-General also stressed the importance of ensuring that the new government represents the interests of all Libyans, and welcomed the commitment of the Prime Minister-designate that women employ 30%." The head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Jan Kubis, arrived in Tripoli on his first visit to Libya after his appointment, to meet with Libyan officials and actors in various parts of the country.


The UN Special Envoy met with Libyan officials, accompanied by the Coordinator of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Rizdon Zininga, and the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, Georgette Gagnon.


According to a press release issued by the United Nations Mission, Kubis expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received, reiterating the United Nations' full support for the Libyan people in their endeavor to achieve peace, stability, prosperity and unity, especially through the holding of elections on December 24, 2021. The Special Envoy affirmed the support of nations. The United Nations continues on the humanitarian and development levels, especially in light of the challenges that the Libyan people face due to the threat of the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.


The statement said that the meetings revolved around a wide range of issues, including national and international dynamics in light of the fruitful results achieved by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum meeting in Switzerland, which resulted in the selection of a new interim executive authority, and the need to move forward in the full implementation of the Road Map, including In that smooth transition of power.


The Special Envoy, Jan Kubis, continued his international contacts, where he met, on Monday, in Tunis, the President of the Republic, Qais Saeed, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Othman al-Jarandi. He also had phone calls with Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum, and Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio.
