A study revealed important differences in the two main ways in which children become seriously ill after infection with the Coronavirus, and these results may help doctors and parents to better identify conditions and understand the possibility of children being exposed to the risk of developing diseases after Corona.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), analyzed 1116 cases that were treated in 66 hospitals in 31 states in India, just over half of the patients had acute corona, which is a predominantly lung disease that afflicts most adults who get sick from the virus, in While 539 patients had inflammatory syndrome, which appeared in some children weeks after their mild illness.
The researchers found some similarities, with large differences in symptoms and characteristics of the patients, whose ages ranged from infants to 20 years old, who were hospitalized last year between March 15 and October 31.
Children with the syndrome, called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C, were between the ages of 6 and 12, while more than 80% of those with severe corona were either younger than 6 or older than 12 years old.
For unclear reasons, Dr Adrian Randolph, lead researcher on the study at Boston Children's Hospital, said while young Hispanics appeared to be equally at risk of developing both conditions, black children seemed to be more likely to develop inflammatory syndrome than acute illness.
The study evaluated obesity separately from other underlying health conditions in patients 2 years of age or older, and found that a somewhat higher percentage of those with severe corona were obese.
The data does not reflect the recent rise in inflammatory syndrome cases that followed a spike in total Corona cases across America during the winter vacation season.
