A prominent aide to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Iran calls for the abolition of the re-imposition of sanctions mechanism in its nuclear deal, which could re-impose all UN sanctions on it, in the event of new talks with world powers.
Under the nuclear deal signed in 2015, Iran agreed to reduce its nuclear activity in exchange for the lifting of US and other sanctions. The agreement includes an option to re-impose sanctions in case they violate it. It also stipulates that Iran suspend all activities related to uranium enrichment, including research and development.
"This mechanism should be abandoned as it is an irrational principle in the event of further talks," Ali Akbar Velayati, a Khamenei advisor, said in an interview published on the Supreme Leader's website.
Velayati, a former foreign minister, added, "The Supreme Leader was not satisfied from the start with this mechanism, which was introduced against his will."
Iran rejected Western calls for broader international talks about its nuclear and military ambitions after US President Donald Trump announced his country's withdrawal from the accord in 2018 and reimposing sanctions.
The director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency told Reuters on Monday that world powers and Iran have weeks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal after Iran began enriching uranium to higher levels of purity and threatened its parliament to block entry to UN inspectors next month.
